SQL sever does provide similar access to what FIleMaker server can do. With Access, the users were just opening the database on a File server share so this type of sharing wasn't robust. FileMaker can handle up to 10 users in a Database shared through FileMaker. If a DB needed more then a couple of people working in it then it had to be hosted on MS SQL server. There was one other major drawback to access and that was multiple users. There are other alternatives out there, but FileMaker does an excellent job and has a great potential for growth. The better/clearer the interface the less training. Although my guess that is true for most systems and can be dependent on the user interface design. It also took a bit of training of the Database uses to generate the reports or letters after the database was put into use. In general it was much harder to develop the user interfaces then FileMaker. The only advantage that Access had over FileMaker was that it was on every desktop due to a corporate purchase of MS office pro. In short things that could be done in FileMaker. In general these would provide reports, pull data from our AS400 system or generate letter. In a prior position we used Access to develop business tools for the office. Why are you looking for a replacement? Re-writing an existing application and developing the expertise to do it can be a big job.
